There are a lot of scams in the digital world, but with a few small and simple steps, you can protect yourself from the majority of them.
We’ve listed out the main scams in the market for you.
Phishing scam
Sometimes the website you are using looks familiar. You miss spotting the slightly different URL and enter in your personal details. These are recorded and used instantly elsewhere, a silent and instant scam. This is known as phishing.
You can protect yourself by following three easy steps:
- Always be suspicious - if a service is asking for extra information, do not give it. Contact their customer support directly and verify the request.
- Verify the website your using is secure. You can do this by checking that the URL starts with a ‘https’ (not ‘http’) and that there is a closed lock in the address bar, this means the site has an active SSL certificate.
- Don’t just click onto sites, write out the address into the browser.
Fake customer support
You may receive a phone call from a company requesting that you give them personal data so they can access your account. Common reasons are that your account has been compromised. In these cases you should always remember no company will ever contact you for personal details. No company will urge you to make a quick decision on something you shouldn’t. In these cases you should decline to give the information, put the phone down and ring the company in question. They will be able to tell you the legitimacy of the request very quickly.

Fake companies selling services of products
Be careful giving your financial details to companies you have never heard of. You can very quickly verify a company’s legitimacy by checking what their reputation online is. A scam company will very quickly have a lot of complaints about it. Another thing to look out for is attention to detail. Does the site have a lot of spelling errors, inconsistencies, if so, you should simply walk away.
